Philo 74: Philosophy of Love

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a course on the psycho-philosophical meaning of love - its varied meanings, components, characteristics, as well as its varied risks and expressions. The importance of communication, the misconceptions regarding sex and the nature of jealousy and forgiveness are also integrated into this course. Lastly, the experience of dread and anxiety in the awareness of death as well as some practical suggestions on how to achieve a loving, healthy relationship are also incorporated in this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To deepen the student's understanding of the meaning and nature of love and loving relationship; to develop the student's awareness of the significance and value of love to human life and human development; to awaken the student's sensitivity of the need to develop fulfilling and deeply satisfying love relationships. Authenticity, freedom, commitment, suffering, hope, respect and the finitude of love are implicitly treated in the context of the student's experience, vis-a-vis the scope of the reading materials. To encourage the students to be more loving and to be more appreciative of the value of the other as precious and unique is also an objective of this course.
